J.S.M.T.C
The Joint Services Mountain Training Centre in Anglesey is a state of the art climbing facility; a real centre of excellence and unquestionably the best Military wall in the country. With over 700m2 of climbing surface it offers excellent training opportunities for all levels of ability. The wall has been built exclusively by Entre-Prises, the UK’s and the World’s largest and most innovative climbing wall producer. Using the very best panel systems and the latest hand moulded Freeform system, walls of unparalleled quality and aesthetics have been produced. The Freeform system perfectly represents the looks, feel and texture of natural rock As climbers enter the dedicated climbing arena, to their left are the huge overhanging sections of the competition zone. With walls 6m overhanging and at nearly 450 the military will be able to hold the very highest level competitions, with routes at grades equal to the hardest in the world.
The right hand end wall of the arena is dedicated to the novice, introductory climber with easy angled routes and many opportunities to practice top roping, abseiling and many other climbing techniques. Finally against the wall, with the door through which you enter the arena, is a bouldering wall of stunning quality and interest. Containing a ‘natural’ rock arch and surfaces at a wide variety of angles, the dedicated boulderer will be in heaven. This wall is as good, if not better than any bouldering wall ever built. The JSMTC climbing wall will be open and ready for use in early February 2000. Service personnel wishing to use the wall should contact JSMTC on 01248 715635 For more pictures of this exciting new wall please check out our Pictures page. Fun Planet Fun Planet is a new ‘Fun’ Centre on the edge of Lake Geneva. The Centre boasts an indoor go-karting circuit, a full bowling arena, a large adventure playground and now, courtesy of an Entre-Prises a climbing wall. The climbing wall is entirely constructed using the Freeform system and is deeply featured and carved to allow for climbers in trainers to climb comfortably. As the Centre is not dedicated to climbing the life-lining system is with Automatic Belay Devices. At the top of each route a wire cable emerges through a hole at the top of the wall. Each climber’s harness is linked to the cable. As the climber ascends the cable retracts into the Automatic Belay Device hidden behind the wall. When the climber wants to descend or falls off the wall he or she is automatically lowered down to the floor at a comfortable descent rate. This system avoids the need for a life-liner with each climber, so for Fun Planet the staffing costs are reduced. Tiso’s When the Director’s of the Tiso’s Outdoor Stores went on a recent tour of the United States they were struck by the Entre-Prises climbing tower at the REI in Seattle. With their imagination fired they returned to Scotland and incorporated a tower into their plans for a new outdoor superstore on the outskirts of Glasgow. Entre-Prises (UK) are now building a climbing spire that will rise from the floor of this new store and up through the roof 10.5 metres above. But to prevent the weather enter the building a glass dome is going to be constructed over the top of the spire. Climbers will be able to climb all around the spire and as they climb the last 2 metres they will have a clear view over Glasgow. At floor level one side of the spire is extended to envelop a storm chamber. The Storm Chamber will be used to replicate some of the severe condition of a typical Scottish winter. There will be wind generator capable a blowing 60 km/hour winds, the temperature will be able to be dropped to - 3°c and there will be an ice wall so that customers can experiment with different ice tools on real ice. Penhale Penhale Camp is the location for a new Imprint outdoor climbing tower for the Armed Services at Newquay, Cornwall. Pingle School in Swadlincote, Derbyshire gets a small resin coated plywood wall and Ormesby Comprehensive School in Cleveland is the site for a new wall with an articulated slab and small overhang. Entre-Prises Entre-Prises have recently recruited two new climbers to their team of sponsored climbers. Jemma Powell and Gareth Parry are both at the forefront of the climbing world with a selection of ‘firsts’ to their credit. Jemma recently won the French National Open Junior Championships. The French were suitably astounded - particularly when they discovered she was only 12 years old! This win coupled with her win at the World Championships in Birmingham helps underline that Jemma is going to be - indeed she already is - a major force on the world climbing scene. Gareth is the current British speed climbing champion. He has been a leading member of the British climbing team for many years with many notable wins under his belt. He has made many notable first ascents on crags around the north of England, most of which were accomplished with his climbing partner Ian Vickers, the current 1999 European Climbing Champion and fellow Entre-Prises climber. Jemma & Gareth join three other of the
UK's leading climbers already signed up as sponsored climbers. Ian Vickers, the new European Champion, and winner of this season’s British Indoor Climbing Championships comprehensively with four straight victories, has recently joined the team. Neil Carson,
the 1997 British climbing champion, is also on the Entre-Prises
team. The 28 year old completed the first ascent of Britain’s
hardest route - ‘The Big Bang’ 9a, Lower Adam Dewhurst is the most recent addition to the team. Adam is the British junior indoor climbing champion. His recent winning form in the British Regional Youth Competition bodes well for the future for Adam. Entre Prises look forward to continuing support for this elite team over the years to come. As Colin Boothroyd their Operations Manager explains: "Our sponsored climbers are a driving force within the climbing fraternity, and are set to be formidable ambassadors for Entre-Prises."
